The City of Afton is located in Washington County, approximately fifteen miles east of downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, along the beautiful St. Croix River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.4 square miles (68.3 km²), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.2 km²) of it is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) of it (4.51%) is water. County 21 serves as a main route in the community.

There were 996 households out of which 21.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 93.7% were married couples living together, The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04.
The median household income was $109,387. The poverty rate was 6.1%. 18.6% of residents had a bachelors degree or higher. The median rent was not available and 96.0% owned their homes. The average value of a housing unit was $556,400.

AFTON Township, first settled in 1837, organized in May 1858, has a city in section 22, on the shore of Lake St. Croix, platted in May 1855 and incorporated as a city in 1971, named by C. S. Getchell, "from Burns' poem, 'Afton Water,' which gives a fine description of the 'neighboring hills, and the clear winding rills'" (History of Washington County and the St. Croix Valley, p. 402). The post office began as Milton Mills in 1854, named for the first flour mill in the county and the first privately owned mill north of Prairie du Chien, built in 1853 by Lemuel Bolles, the first postmaster; the name was changed to Afton in 1857; it had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.
