Geography:

Austin is a city in and the county seat of Mower County, Minnesota. Austin is located at the intersection of Interstate Highway 90 and U.S. Highway 218 in the southeastern part of the state. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.90 square miles (30.82 km2), of which 11.79 square miles (30.54 km2) is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 km2) is water. Its elevation is 1,204 ft (367 m).

Demographics:

As of the census of 2010, there were 24,718 people, 10,131 households, and 6,114 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,096.5 inhabitants per square mile (809.5/km2). There were 10,870 housing units at an average density of 922.0 per square mile (356.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 86.8% White, 3.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.8% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.4% of the population.

There were 10,131 households of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.05.

The median age in the city was 37 years. 25.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.5% were from 45 to 64; and 17.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.2% male and 50.8% female.

History:

AUSTIN, the county seat, platted in the spring of 1856, incorporated as a village on March 6, 1868, and as a city on February 28, 1871, and February 28, 1876, and also Austin Township, organized in 1858, were named for Austin R. Nichols, their first settler. He was born in Lawrence County, N.Y., June 13, 1814; came to Minnesota in 1851 and took a land claim in 1853 on the site of this city; built a sawmill here in 1854 but sold this claim later in the same year; was a pioneer farmer subsequently at several other places in this state; removed to Minneapolis in 1865 and to the northwest shore of Mille Lacs in 1879, where Nichols post office, named in his honor, was established at his home, at the west edge of Aitkin County. He died there, almost a century old, April 5, 1914.

The post office began in 1855; the city had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The most well known of the many businesses in the city is George A. Hormel and Company, begun by Hormel on borrowed money in 1891; its national advertising, begun in 1910, made its products household names; Hormel, born in Ohio, died in 1946 in California at age 85.
