History:

BEMIDJI Township and city were named for an Ojibwe leader whose band of about 50 people had their homes on and near the south end of Lake Bemidji and around Lake Irving, including the site where white settlers founded this town. The chief died in April 1904 at the age of 85 years. His name was taken from the older Ojibwe name of this lake, crossed by the Mississippi. Rev. Joseph A. Gilfillan translated it as "the lake where the current flows directly across the water, referring to the river flowing squarely out of the lake on the east side, cutting it in two as it were, very briefly Cross lake." The city was settled in 1866. Its post office was spelled Bermidji 1894-98, when it was changed to its present spelling and incorporated as a village. During the city's early settlement, there were three sawmills, two planing mills, four churches, three schools, a number of small businesses, the Bemidji Opera House, and the Band of Bemidji.

Bemidji (Images of America) Bemidji (Images of America)
Bemidji links its early history to that of Shay-now-ish-kung, or Chief Bemidji, who lived with his family on the shores of the lovely lake bearing his name. After the Carson brothers opened their trading post in 1888, logging flourished and lumber camps boomed. Bemidji was incorporated in 1896, and the railroad reached the town in 1898. Hotels, businesses, and saloons mushroomed near the railroad tracks. Saloons and a brisk nightlife kept Bemidji in the news until federal agent W.E. "Pussyfoot" Johnson and his deputies closed the saloons and made it a more respectable place to live. Early settlers took advantage of the beautiful shoreline to develop summer hotels and parks. Kodak reported that the spot where the statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox stand is the second-most-photographed tourist attraction in the United States.

Camp Rabideau National Historic Landmarkrepresents the best preserved of the Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the nation. Part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's mammoth "New Deal," Camp Rabideau was one of the 2,650 camps established across the country in 1935.  The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) gave more than a quarter of a million young men, many of them unemployed and just scraping by during the Great Depression... some skills, some money, some happy memories. Camps were run jointly by the U. S. Forest Service, which manage the camps today, and the U.S. Army, which commanded the camps. Enjoy a self-guided walk through the camp or hosts provide tours as well.

Watermark Art Center (WAC) is a non-profit, member-supported organization dedicated to encouraging the growth and development of art in our community. Watermark provides gallery space for exhibitions, author readings and  workshops. We display national, regional and local artists in group exhibits, solo shows and installations. Watermark began as the Bemidji Community Arts Center (BCAC). It was founded in 1982 after a merger between The Bemidji Community Arts Council, Inc. (established in 1970) and the Bemidji Art Center Association. In October of 2012, the BCAC purchased the former Lakeside Luekens grocery store located across the street from its previous home in the historic Carnegie Library on the shores of Lake Bemidji. In February of 2014, the BCAC changed its name to the Watermark Art Center. Watermark moved into its new location in the former Lakeside Luekens grocery store in December 2017.

The Pioneer Resort is a unique fishing and family experience. It will take you back to a simpler time centered around early mornings casting for the big one, slamming screen doors as kids run to the lake with their inner tubes, and evenings of s'mores around a campfire.
