History:

DARFUR, a city in sections 19, 20, and 29 of Adrian, platted in April 20, 1899, by the Chicago and North Western Railway, and incorporated as a village on December 31, 1903, was named either from a region of Sudan or when two Scandinavian railroad men questioned, "why you stop dar fur?" The townsite was on land owned by farmer Jacob D. Heppner on the east side of the tracks; Heppner, born in Belgium in 1873, was the first postmaster when the post office began in 1900.
