Detroit Lakes is a city in the state of Minnesota and the county seat of Becker County. U.S. Routes 10 and 59, and Minnesota State Highway 34 serve as the primary arterial routes through the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.20 square miles (39.37 km²), of which, 10.22 square miles (26.47 km²) of it is land and 4.98 square miles (12.90 km²) of it is water. The elevation is 1,368 ft (417 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,569 people, 3,864 households, and 2,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 838.5 inhabitants per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 4,535 housing units at an average density of 443.7 per square mile (171.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.6% White, 0.7% African American, 4.4% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.
There were 3,864 households of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.8% were non-families. 39.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.84.
The median age in the city was 41.6 years. 22% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.2% were from 25 to 44; 24.6% were from 45 to 64; and 21.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.2% male and 52.8% female.

DETROIT LAKES, a city and the county seat, in Detroit Township from its organization in 1871; incorporated as a village in 1880 and as a city in 1900; located in a popular summer resort area on Detroit Lake and the Pelican River; the latter provided power for a flour mill. The post office was called Detroit City (1871-1906) and Detroit (1906-26) before changing to its present name by a vote of its citizens on September 7, 1926. The early settlement had a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad in section 27 and exported wheat, furs, butter, and snakeroot. An area in section 34, absorbed by the city, was called Tyler Town when settled about 1871 near the Pelican River, then renamed Johnstonville for Col. George H. Johnston, who sold real estate and was a miller in the community.
