History:
Chippewa, or the Ojibwe were the first to inhabit the
Ely area. They are believed to have sought refuge with the abundance of
blueberries, which is why the townspeople hold the Blueberry Festival
every year in late July. Trappers and voyagers made their way to the
area in the 1700s in search of new land and abundant furs. Later, in the
mid-1800s while explorers and prospectors were entering the area, the
gold rush began. Although no gold was found in the Ely area, large
deposits of iron ore was. Iron ore was first discovered in Ely in 1883,
near the west end of what is now called, Miner's Lake. As the mining of
the iron ore began, the population of Ely began to boom. The town was first named Florence, but after
discovering that another town in Minnesota was already named Florence,
the name was changed to Ely. This name was in honor of Samuel B. Ely, a
miner from Michigan who never saw the town. After the addition of the railroad in 1888, the mines
began shipping the iron ore to the docks of Lake Superior in Two
Harbors, MN. Originally, the mining was an open pit operation since
there was an abundance of iron ore on the surface. Later, deep shafts
were made to start mining underground. With the addition of underground mining, support beams
made of logs were put in to prevent tunnel collapsing. This in turn
started the logging and milling industry for Ely. In 1967, the Pioneer mine closed. It was the last of
11 mines located in the Ely area. Logging still takes place today in
Ely, but on a limited basis.
From
Wikipedia, the free
encyclopedia.
Ely, a city on the Vermilion Range, in sections 27,
28, 33, and 34 of Morse Township, platted as a village in 1887,
incorporated as a city March 3, 1891, was named in honor of Arthur Ely
of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the financial promoters of the construction
of the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad, which was opened to traffic here
in July 1888. He also was prominent in the development of the iron mines
at Tower. Another citizen distinguished in the history of the
county, for whom this city has been thought to be named, was Rev. Edmund
Franklin Ely, who was born in Wilbraham, Mass., August 3, 1809, and died
in Santa Rosa, Calif., August 29, 1882. He came to Minnesota in 1832 as
a missionary to the Ojibwe, under appointment by the American Board for
Foreign Missions, and located at Sandy Lake. In 1834 his mission school
was removed to Fond du Lac, where he labored until May 1839, then
removing to Pokegama. In 1854 he came as a homesteader to the site of
Superior, Wis., and in the next year he settled at Oneota, now a part of
Duluth. He platted the Oneota town site, built a steam sawmill and
docks, and was the postmaster six years but removed in 1862 to St. Paul. Courtesy Minnesota

Mesabi Trail
The Taconite State Trail stretches 165 miles from Grand Rapids
to Ely and intersects with the Arrowhead State Trail just west
of Lake Vermillion. Portions
are paved for biking and in-line skating. The remainder of the
natural surface trail is used primarily for snowmobiling in the
winter. The trail goes through a few areas that have standing
water in the summer, however portions of the trail are suitable
for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking.
The Taconite Trail winds through forests of birch
and aspen intertwined with pine, leading the visitor by many isolated
lakes and streams. From Grand Rapids heading north, you see the
impact of the taconite and iron mining industry. The northern portion
of the trail terrain is rolling and tree covered as it winds through
state and national forest land. Eight trail waysides and picnic facilities offer
scenic vistas of the hills, lakes and rivers of this area. The trail
also links three state parks: Bear Head Lake, Soudan Underground
Mine, and McCarthy Beach. The landscape in and around Bear Head
Lake State Park is very rolling and rocky. |
