History:

HOUSTON Township, settled in 1852 and organized in 1858, was named, like the county, for Gen. Sam Houston of Texas. The village was incorporated April 7, 1874. It was first settled in June 1852 by William G. McSpadden from La Crosse, Wis., at a site just west of the fork of Root River and its south fork, which he platted in 1856. The first store was built by Ole Knutson, who became first postmaster in 1856. When the Southern Minnesota Railroad laid track in 1866 and Mons Anderson donated the right-of-way and depot site, the town moved west to the present site. The city was reincorporated on October 10, 1889.

Cross of Christ Lutheran Church has been a cornerstone of our community dating back to 1855 when the Houston Lutheran Church was organized. Over a century and a half later, life has significantly changed but the spiritual life that our ancestors proclaimed still exists and continues to flourish. We believe, as they did, that a strong faith is essential to a fulfilling life and we strive daily to follow our convictions.

On August 18, 1853, a group of Swedish immigrants gathered to worship for the first time in Houston, MN, having left their homeland to seek religious freedom and the ability to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience.  In our 164 year history, our priorities have not changed.  We are a Bible-centered, Christ-exalting, and missions-oriented congregation that meet regularly for worship and fellowship.

Jake Wieser Construction, Inc. is a family owned firm owned with Jake Wieser as principal owner. Raised around his dad's plumbing and excavating business and his grandparent's dairy farm, Jake learned about hard work and honesty at a very early age. He began his construction career as an apprentice carpenter with a local commercial contractor. Learning the trade through hands-on experience, Jake became a journeyman carpenter and quickly progressed to a job foreman. Captured by entrepreneurial spirit, Jake formed Jake Wieser Construction, Inc. in 1989 with the desire to provide quality construction services at competitive prices. Since inception, the company has grown into large and small residential projects, commercial projects, major and small renovations, sewer and water line work, and excavating.
