History:

LAKE ELMO, a city in sections 13 and 14 of Oakdale, was named for the adjoining lake, which was formerly called Bass Lake but was renamed Lake Elmo in 1879 by Alpheus B. Stickney of St. Paul, "from the novel, 'St. Elmo'" (Stennett, Place Names of the Chicago and Northwestern Railways, 1908, p. 180). The city was incorporated as a village on December 21, 1925; 100 acres was platted in 1874 by the Chicago and North Western Railway as Bass Lake and renamed later. The post office, first called Lohmanville, was established in 1866 in a halfway house, with Peter Stoltz as postmaster, and reestablished at Bass Lake with the same name.
