Guide to New York Mills Minnesota

New York Mills is a city in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. U.S. Highway 10 serves as a main route in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.30 square miles (3.37 km2), all of it land. The elevation is 1,411 ft (430 m) above sea level.

NEW YORK MILLS, a city in section 8 of Newton Township, was platted on October 12, 1883, and incorporated on May 27, 1884. One of first settlers, Randolph L. Frazee, owned most of townsite land and had a sawmill, which he sold to the New York Mills Company in 1873, moving to the village in Becker County named for him, although later returning to Pelican Rapids. The community expanded with the sawmills built by Dr. Van Aerman, commissioner of pensions in Washington, D.C., and his partners; their company was organized in Olean, N.Y., in 1872 and was called New York Mills for Aerman's home state, a name adopted by the community; the company dissolved in 1882. The Northern Pacific Railroad came in 1871, and the post office was established in 1874. Although Yankees were the first to settle in the city, it was the Finnish immigrants who stayed and developed the community.
