History:

NEWPORT Township, organized in May 1858, received the name of its city, which was so named by Mrs. James H. Hugunin. This is also the name of cities in Rhode Island and Kentucky and of villages and townships in 30 other states. The first settlement was in 1841 near the Dakota village of Kaposia (1839-43). Newport was also the name of a post office in St. Croix County, Wisconsin Territory, February 1843, with William R. Brown, postmaster; when John A. Ford built a trading post in the village, the post office was relocated in 1844; the name was changed to Red Rock in 1849 and to Newport in 1857. The village was platted as Red Rock on December 19, 1849, was renamed Newport on May 4, 1857, replatted in 1861, and incorporated in 1889 as a village; it had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.
