History:

ORONOCO Township, organized in 1858, was named for its village in section 17, founded in 1854, which Dr. Hector Galloway, one of its first settlers, named for the large Orinoco River (differently spelled) in South America, in allusion to the valuable waterpower of the Middle Branch of the Zumbro River at this village. The village was incorporated on March 6, 1968; the post office was established in 1854, with Robert K. Whitely, an early settler from St. Louis, Mo., as postmaster; the station for Oronoco on the Chicago and North Western Railway was located west of the city in section 22 of New Haven Township.
