History:

PORTER, a city in sections 28, 29, 32, and 33 of Wergeland, platted in October 1881 and incorporated February 16, 1898, was named for the L. C. Porter Milling Company, by whom its first grain warehouse was erected. The plat of 4 blocks and 20 warehouse lots was made on a siding of the Winona and St. Peter Railroad. The post office began as Harstad in Lincoln County, June 3, 1875, to November 18, 1881, with W. G. A. Harstad, postmaster on his farm; it was moved to Yellow Medicine County in 1881 and first named Dalston, with store owner Ole Dahl, postmaster; and then changed in 1882 to Porter; it had a station of the Chicago and North Western Railway. The village was also known earlier as Lone Tree for the landmark single tree on Main Street, removed in 1909 for sidewalk construction.
