Geography:

Sargeant is a city in Sargeant Township, Mower County, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,391 ft (424 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 76 people, 29 households, and 20 families residing in the city. The population density was 91.1 people per square mile (35.4/km²). There were 33 housing units at an average density of 39.6/sq mi (15.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.68% White, and 1.32% from two or more races.

There were 29 households out of which 44.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 32.9% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 14.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,333, and the median income for a family was $38,333. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $12,188 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,485. There were 7.1% of families and 15.4% of the population living below the poverty line, including 16.0% of under eighteens and none of those over 64.

History:

SARGEANT Township, organized September 16, 1873, was named in honor of Harry N. Sargeant, one of its pioneer farmers. He was born in the Province of Quebec, June 19, 1817; came to Wisconsin in 1858 and to this county in 1865, settling in section 11 of this township; was elected the first township clerk; died January 25, 1884. Sargeant, a city in sections 18 and 19, was platted September 7, 1894, incorporated as a village on August 25, 1900, and reincorporated on March 10, 1921. It had a station on the Chicago Great Western Railroad; the post office was established in 1881.
