Geography:

St. Michael is a city in eastern Wright County, Minnesota. Interstate 94 and Minnesota State Highway 241 are two of the main arterial routes in the city. The Crow River flows along the city's eastern boundary, separating it from Hassan Township in Hennepin County. It also borders Monticello Township, Buffalo Township, Rockford Township, and the cities of Otsego and Albertville, all in Wright County, as well as the city of Hanover, which lies in both Wright and Hennepin counties. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.4 square miles (94.3 kmē), of which, 32.6 square miles (84.3 kmē) of it is land and 3.8 square miles (9.9 kmē) of it (10.55%) is water. The elevation is 965 ft (294 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,099 people, 2,926 households, and 2,437 families residing in the city. The population density was 279.4 people per square mile (107.9/kmē). There were 3,058 housing units at an average density of 93.9/sq mi (36.3/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 98.46% White, 0.03% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population. 49.9% were of German, 8.7% Norwegian, 7.0% Irish, 6.9% United States or American and 5.7% Swedish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 2,926 households out of which 51.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.2% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.7% were non-families. 11.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.40.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 37.7% from 25 to 44, 16.0% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males

The median income for a household in the city was $69,903, and the median income for a family was $74,236. Males had a median income of $46,488 versus $32,402 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,742. About 1.4% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1% of those under age 18 and 10.0% of those age 65 or over.

History:  

ST. MICHAEL, a city in section 36 of Otsego, incorporated February 22, 1890, was named from its Catholic church, which was built in 1856. Three post offices were established: the first was in section 11 of Frankfort Township, 1858-64; the second, 1866-89, was first called St. Michaels and was then changed to St. Michael; the third was called St. Michaels Station, 1866-89, and then St. Michael Station, 1904-9, when it was transferred to Albertville.
