History:

TAUNTON, a city in section 17, Eidsvold, platted in April 1886 and incorporated March 27, 1900, was named by C. C. Wheeler, an officer of Winona and St. Peter Railroad, for the city of Taunton in Massachusetts. It was first called Lonesome in August 1886 when the post office was established, indicative of its position on the prairie, changed three months later to Ripon after a community in Wisconsin, and changed again in 1888 to Taunton.
