History:
The city of
Akeley was incorporated on December 30, 1916. It was developed on
large tracts of timber land that had been surveyed by Thomas Barlow Walker
in 1876 and purchased by him and Akeley a short time later; their Red
River Lumber Company began in 1893. General settlement began about 1895,
with a general store, a brick industry, and hotels; the railroad came in
1899; the post office began in 1895 as Akely in postmaster John A.
Plummer's home. Plummer was born in Indiana in 1851, came with his family
to Minnesota in 1855 and to Akeley Township in 1894; the name changed to
the present spelling in 1927. Dairying replaced the lumber industry by the
early 1900s, and the Red River Lumber Company moved its mill to California
in 1917.

Audrey's Purple
Dream PO Box 272 Akeley, MN 56433 Phone:
(218) 252-9993
Second Saturday in February
Dedicated to the memory of Audrey Faye
Pidde, a life long resident of Akeley, Minnesota. After a heroic
battle against cancer Audrey passed away on March 24th 2005. One
of Audrey’s last wishes was to go to Alaska. Audrey had many
friends and many family members who helped make the original
Purple Dream happen in February of 2005, on the 11th Crow Wing
Lake. The event raised almost $10,000 to send Audrey to Alaska.
Unfortunately the cancer didn’t give Audrey enough time to
realize her dream, but the money raised did make a huge impact
on the last few weeks of Audrey’s life. It enabled her to pay
medical bills and other expenses, giving her some peace of mind,
and most of all it let her know how much people care. Now the
Annual Purple Dream will raise funds to help other local cancer
victims and their families.

Heartland Trail Web:

The Heartland State Trail was one of the first
rail-to-trail projects in the country. It is a 49 mile multiple use
trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. The trail is located entirely
on a level abandoned railroad grade except for a four mile segment
north of Walker, on sharply rolling terrain. The 27 mile segment
between Park Rapids and Walker has a paved surface. This segment also
has a second grassy treadway for horseback riding and mountain biking.
The 22 mile segment from Walker to Cass Lake is primarily compacted
gravel and railroad ballast with occasional sandy areas and can be
used for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. In winter, an alternate trail is groomed for
snowmobiling between Park Rapids and Walker. (The paved trail between
Park Rapids and Walker is closed to all snowmobiles.) Snowmobiles are
allowed on the Heartland State Trail between Walker and Cass Lake.
There also are connections from the trail to many miles of groomed
snowmobile trails in the Hubbard county Grant-in-Aid trail system. Views of lakes, rivers and streams are numerous, and
many are accessible from the trail. The trail passes through northern
hardwood forests and stands of jack, red, and white pine, as well as
the spruce fir forest community. The occasional majestic white pine
can be seen towering over the trail. Common mammals noticed along the
trail include whitetail deer, raccoon, red fox, porcupine, beaver and
muskrat. The observant trail user may spot coyote, weasel, mink,
bobcat or black bear. Many varieties of birds can be seen along the
trail including the bald eagle, which has a large population in the
Chippewa National Forest and surrounding area.
