History:

BAYPORT, a city in Baytown Township, formerly South Stillwater, was incorporated in 1957. The townsite was settled in 1842 but not developed until 1852, when it was platted as a village called Baytown by mill owner Socrates Nelson and others; it was resurveyed in 1872 by a railroad, which had purchased the land, and renamed it South Stillwater, building a spur line from Stillwater. The post office began in 1873 in the office of the St. Croix Lumber Company, with one of the owners, William Graves, as postmaster, and became Bayport in 1922; it had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.
