Brooten is a city in Pope and Stearns counties in the state of Minnesota. Almost the entire city lies in Stearns County, with only a small portion in Pope County. Minnesota State Highway 55 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.57 square miles (4.07 km2), all of it land. The elevation is 1,312 feet (400 m).

As of the census of 2010, there were 743 people, 294 households, and 167 families residing in the city. The population density was 473.2 inhabitants per square mile (182.7/km2). There were 320 housing units at an average density of 203.8 per square mile (78.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.6% of the population.
There were 294 households of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.2% were non-families. 38.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 3.00.
The median age in the city was 43.9 years. 22.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22% were from 25 to 44; 20.5% were from 45 to 64; and 27.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.3% male and 50.7% female.

BROOTEN, a city in North Fork Township, with Pope County, founded with the building of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) in 1886, was named for one of its Scandinavian farmers. The village was incorporated on February 16, 1892. The townsite was on land owned by Reier O. Liabraaten, and the site was given a form of his name; that family was known as the Brootens from then on. The early site in section 31 had a station of the Soo Line, Embrick E. Knudson was postmaster when the post office was established in 1886; Knudson was earlier postmaster at North Fork.
