Carlton is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota. It is the county seat of Carlton County. Minnesota State Highways 45 and 210 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.27 square miles (5.88 km²), of which, 2.06 square miles (5.34 km²) of it is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 km²) of it is water. Thomson Dam, Thomson Reservoir, and Jay Cooke State Park are also nearby; and the Willard Munger Bicycle Trail runs through the city of Carlton.

As of the census of 2010, there were 862 people, 337 households, and 175 families residing in the city. The population density was 418.4 inhabitants per square mile (161.5/km2). There were 355 housing units at an average density of 172.3 per square mile (66.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.0% White, 0.5% African American, 4.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
There were 337 households of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 48.1% were non-families. 43.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.82.
The median age in the city was 44.2 years. 18% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.2% were from 25 to 44; 21.4% were from 45 to 64; and 27.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 44.8% male and 55.2% female.

CARLTON, a city and the county seat in Twin Lakes Township, took its name, like the county, in honor of Reuben B. Carlton. From the building of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1870 to 1891, this place was called Northern Pacific Junction, being at the junction of that transcontinental line with the older Lake Superior and Mississippi line. The city began as a lumbering community, with power supplied by the St. Louis River and Otter Creek for a planing mill; the St. Joseph and Mary log cabin church was built in the early 1800s west of the city.

Annual Carlton Winterfest Our Winterfest Celebration is held the second Saturday in February of each year. Carlton Daze Celebration During the last full weekend in July of each year, we celebrate Carlton Daze, a community-wide celebration which includes softball tournaments, golf outings, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, craft shows, auctions, children’s theater, community plays, street dances a 5k race and an ultra-marathon, a business expo, bingo, live entertainment, a parade, a kid’s tractor pull and food galore! There is something for everyone and a great time is had by all who attend.

Fair 3rd weekend in August. We have some great shows planned for this year. We also have the ONLY horse racing left in Minnesota at any County Fair! Our barns are full of animals and friendly folk. We also have a Oval, Figure 8, DEMO AND tractor pull . We, as Fair officials, are very proud of our 4H! What a fabulous group of kids we have!
