Donnelly is a city in Stevens County, Minnesota. Minnesota Highway 9 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.08 square miles (7.98 km2); 2.76 square miles (7.15 km2) of land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 km2) of water. The elevation is 1,129 ft (344 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2010, there were 241 people, 113 households, and 72 families residing in the city. The population density was 87.3 inhabitants per square mile (33.7/km2). There were 125 housing units at an average density of 45.3 per square mile (17.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.

There were 113 households of which 22.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.63.

The median age in the city was 50.1 years. 17.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.7% were from 25 to 44; 27.5% were from 45 to 64; and 29.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.4% male and 50.6% female.

DONNELLY Township and its city in section 24, platted on December 8, 1871, incorporated as a village in June 1900, and at first called Douglas, are named in honor of Ignatius Donnelly, the distinguished politician and author, who owned a farm in section 31, Rendsville, about a mile east of this village. He is also honored by the name of a township in Marshall County, for which a biographic sketch has been presented. The city's railroad station, Douglas, was in section 25, a name used until 1877. John Gavin Donnelly, brother of Ignatius Donnelly, was depot agent when the railroad came in 1872, and when the post office was established in 1876, he became postmaster at the depot (he died in 1889); it is shown as Douglas on an 1874 map in section 25, with the Great Northern Railway station.

In 1992 the Bank’s owner and Board of Directors decided to expand its service area in order to improve services to the surrounding communities. The First State Bank, Chokio, Minnesota was purchased on September 4, 1992. The two banks continued to operate as separate entities until September 14, 1993, when they merged together. The resulting Bank was named Farmers & Merchants State Bank. The Bank operated its two offices in Donnelly and Chokio until February 16, 1994, when the Bank relocated its Charter from Donnelly to Morris, Minnesota. In addition to moving the Bank Charter from Donnelly to Morris, the Bank changed its name to United Farmers & Merchants State Bank.
