Elk River is a city in and the county seat of Sherburne County, Minnesota, United States, about 34 miles northwest of Minneapolis. It is situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Elk Rivers. Elk River is located 33.2 miles northwest of Minneapolis and 37.4 miles southeast of St. Cloud. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.82 square miles (113.49 km2); 42.29 square miles (109.53 km2) is land and 1.53 square miles (3.96 km2) is water. The city's latitude and longitude are 45.313601° N and 93.5814° W. The elevation is 896 feet (273 m).

As of the census of 2010, there were 22,974 people, 8,080 households, and 6,050 families residing in the city. The population density was 543.2 inhabitants per square mile (209.7/km2). There were 8,542 housing units at an average density of 202.0 per square mile (78.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.4% White, 1.8% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.
There were 8,080 households of which 42.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.1% were non-families. 19.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.18.
The median age in the city was 34.9 years. 28.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.5% were from 25 to 44; 24.9% were from 45 to 64; and 9.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.2% male and 49.8% female.

The township was divided into ELK RIVER NORTH Township: T. 33N, R. 26W; and ELK RIVER SOUTH Township: T. 32N, R. 26W. The city of Elk River in sections 33 and 34 of Elk River North Township was incorporated as a village on February 19, 1881, and reincorporated on February 6, 1911. The first post office, 1851-67, was established while in Benton County and transferred to Orono; the second post office was at Elk River Station, 1866-76, and became Elk River. The business district developed on the north side of the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railroad tracks. The county seat was first established at Humboldt, now Big Lake village, as before noted, but its offices were removed in 1867 to Elk River village, then known, in distinction from Orono, as "the Lower Town."
