History:

FRIDLEY, a fractional township comprising only about 16 square miles, was established by legislative act as Manomin County (meaning Wild Rice) on the same date, May 23, 1857, with the establishment of Anoka County. "John Banfil settled in what is now Fridley in 1847 and kept a stopping place for the accommodation of travelers. Two years later Henry M. Rice acquired considerable land and built a country residence at Cold Springs, giving his name to the creek which flows through the town. . . . A ferry across the Mississippi River was established about 1854" (Goodrich, pp. 162-63). This small county continued nearly 13 years, until in 1869-70 it was united with Anoka County as Manomin Township. The name was changed to Fridley in 1879, and it was incorporated as a village June 18, 1949.

Abram McCormick Fridley in whose honor this township received its name was born in Steuben County, N.Y., May 1, 1817. He came to Long Prairie, Minnesota, in 1851 as agent for the Winnebago Indians, was afterward a farmer in this township, and in 1869 opened a large farm in Becker, Sherburne County. He was a representative in the legislature in 1855, 1869-71, and 1879. He died in Fridley Township, March 1888.

The Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts (BLCA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community art center in Fridley, Minnesota. Established in 1979, it was originally known as North Suburban Center for the Arts. In 1988 it outgrew its original shopping mall home and settled in to the historic former tavern and farm house–the Banfill-Locke house–on the Mississippi River in Fridley under its new name, the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts. The house is owned and maintained by Anoka County through its Parks and Recreation Department and is located in the Manomin County Park

The Fridley Historical Society was founded in 1985 for the purpose of saving Fridley District 23 School from demolition. This historic schoolhouse is located adjacent to Hayes Elementary School. Fridley is the only community in Anoka County to have its own local museum—the Fridley History Center. In 1987, the Fridley Historical Society leased the Common School District #23 School at 611 Mississippi Street for use as a historical museum, saving it from demolition.
