Geography:

Geneva is a city in Freeborn County, Minnesota. County Roads 35 and 45 are main routes in the community. Interstate 35 is nearby. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.53 square miles (1.37 km2), of which 0.52 square miles (1.35 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. The elevation is 1,227 ft (374 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2010, there were 555 people, 220 households, and 152 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,067.3 inhabitants per square mile (412.1/km2). There were 228 housing units at an average density of 438.5 per square mile (169.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.6% White, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 220 households of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 30.9% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.06.

The median age in the city was 38.3 years. 27.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.3% were from 25 to 44; 26.3% were from 45 to 64; and 13.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.5% male and 50.5% female.

History:

GENEVA, settled in 1855-56, was organized May 11, 1858. Its village in sections 7 and 8, platted in the winter of 1856-57, had been named by Edwin C. Stacy, the first postmaster there and the first probate judge for the county, "in remembrance of Geneva, N.Y.," whence the large adjoining lake and the township received the same name. It was incorporated November 24, 1889; the post office, begun in 1856, was located first in the O. G. Goodnature home, with John Heath and later E. C. Stacy, postmasters.
