Location:

Location of Grand Portage in Minnesota

The indescribable beauty of Minnesota's legendary North Shore creates memories that can last forever. An ever-changing nature sanctuary where pure waters, prospering pine forests and thriving wildlife abound.

As you drive to Grand Portage, experience the formidable forest-covered Sawtooth Range as famous Highway 61 traverses cliffside corridors, waterfalls, inlets and historic sites. As seasons change, you'll find autumns exploding with color, and winter-painted landscapes of silver and white.

Perched at the tip of Minnesota's Arrowhead Country along the famous Lake Superior North Shore, Grand Portage is one of the most intriguing and picturesque areas in Minnesota. Visit Eagle Mountain, the state's highest point, or the spectacular High Falls in Grand Portage State Park. Ease your way outdoors and explore pristine trails for hiking or cross-country skiing, and great opportunities for viewing wildlife. After dark, find a spot to watch for a spectacular natural light show, the Aurora Borealis.

Whatever the season, something's always happening at Grand Portage. Come visit, make memories, and take a story home.

History:

GRAND PORTAGE, a village and formerly an important trading place, at the head of the bay of this name, and at the southeast end of the Grand Portage, nine miles long, to the Pigeon River above its principal falls, has the distinction of being the most eastern and oldest settlement of white men in the area of Minnesota. Probably during the period of VTrendrye's explorations, this place became the chief point for landing goods from the large canoes used in the navigation of the Great Lakes and for their being dispatched onward, from the end of this long portage, in smaller canoes to the many trading posts of all the rich fur country northwest of Lake Superior. In 1767, when Jonathan Carver went there in the hope of purchasing goods, Grand Portage was an important rendezvous and trading post. At the time of the Revolutionary War, as Gen. James H. Baker has well said, it was the "commercial emporium" of the northwestern fur trade. A post office called Grand Portage in Hovland Township, section 4, was first established in Superior County, Wis., 1856-64, and reestablished in Minnesota, 1864-71.

Torrents of wild water plummet 120 feet over the High Falls down to the Pigeon River in this park on the U.S. - Canadian border. The falls, the highest in the state, presented a serious obstacle to river travel, so a "carrying place," or portage, was necessary. American Indians created the ancient nine-mile trail from Lake Superior to bypass the falls. This trail became known as "The Grand Portage." Today, visitors of all abilities can take a one-half mile trail and boardwalk to the falls overlook area. The park is designed for day use only and contains mixed hardwood-conifer forests and hiking trails along the banks of the Pigeon River. The spectacular scenery sets the stage for recreational opportunities that include hiking, photography, and picnicking. The park lies within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation and is bordered by Canada on the north and east. Lake Superior is about one mile east of the park.
