Guide to Houston Minnesota

Houston is a city in Houston County, Minnesota. Minnesota State Highways 16 and 76 are two of the main routes in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.95 square miles (2.46 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 686 ft (209 m) above sea level.

HOUSTON Township, settled in 1852 and organized in 1858, was named, like the county, for Gen. Sam Houston of Texas. The village was incorporated April 7, 1874. It was first settled in June 1852 by William G. McSpadden from La Crosse, Wis., at a site just west of the fork of Root River and its south fork, which he platted in 1856. The first store was built by Ole Knutson, who became first postmaster in 1856. When the Southern Minnesota Railroad laid track in 1866 and Mons Anderson donated the right-of-way and depot site, the town moved west to the present site. The city was reincorporated on October 10, 1889.
