Kandiyohi is located 4 miles east of Willmar on Highway 12. Within this small town lies big history. In 1870, Kandiyohi was made the temporary county seat when two counties merged (Kandiyohi and Monongalia) before Willmar was chosen because of its central location. South of Kandiyohi, there’s a historic marker overlooking the lakes designating the original site of the state capitol.

Kandiyohi has several businesses, one of its most popular that draws customers from all over Minnesota is Wick’s Meat Shoppe. Wick’s began in 1967 and was founded by Dean Wick. Throughout the years, Wick’s has won many state area awards for its meat. Wick’s is known for having very high-quality meat and arguably the most delicious beef jerky around! Stop by and try some! Kandiyohi is a city in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. U.S. Route 12 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.34 square miles (0.88 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,224 ft (373 m) above sea level.

KANDIYOHI Township was established March 1, 1868, then including also the present townships of Fahlun, Whitefield, and Willmar. It was named, like the county, for the Kandiyohi Lakes. The city in section 10, named for the township, was founded when the railway was built in 1869 and was incorporated May 23, 1857, and again on May 6, 1904, separating from the township on May 4, 1905. The first post office, 1867-71, was transferred to Lake Elizabeth; the second post office was known as Kandiyohi Station until 1894. The village had a station of the Great Northern Railway.

An earlier townsite of this name, platted in October 1856, in section 25 of this township and the adjoining section 30 of Gennessee, at the north side of Lakes Kasota and Minnetaga, aspired to become the capital of Minnesota, for which purpose a bill was passed by the legislature in March 1869 but was vetoed by Gov. William R. Marshall. This project was again brought to the attention of the legislature in 1871, and also in 1891 and 1893, but received no favorable action. In 1901 the "capitol lands," which had been acquired there by the state in 1858, were sold for use in farming.
