Guide to Lakefield Minnesota

Lakefield is a city in Jackson County, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.28 square miles (3.32 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,483 ft (452 m) above sea level.

LAKEFIELD, a city located at the border of Heron Lake and Hunter Townships, founded in 1879 with the completion of the railway to this point, was named for the adjoining Heron Lake. It was incorporated September 1, 1887, but remained part of Heron Lake Township until April 22, 1889, and reincorporated on May 24, 1909. The village was platted in 1879 by Anders R. Kilen, who was born in Norway in 1846, and came to the United States in 1858 and to Jackson County in 1867. Also in 1879, the Southern Minnesota Railroad built a side track and depot in section 32 of Heron Lake Township on land owned by Kilen. The post office began in 1880; Martin A. Foss, first postmaster, born in Norway, was also a bank director, a farmer, a general merchandise store owner, and the Heron Lake Township treasurer. The major milling industry began in 1892; a well-known establishment was the Winter Hotel, built in 1895 by Grant Winter.
