History:

LAKELAND Township, settled in 1839 and organized October 20, 1858, received the name of its city in section 35 of Lakeland Township and section 2 of Afton Township, platted in 1849 beside Lake St. Croix and incorporated as a village on September 27, 1951. The center of the business district in 1857 was on a ravine (coulee) called "Shanghai Cooley," so named for the large Shanghai chickens raised by Freeman C. Tyler, first postmaster when the post office began in 1854; Tyler, born in New York in 1821, came to the area in 1853 and operated the Shanghai Mill. The village had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.
