Geography:

Little Canada is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota. Interstate Highway 35E, Interstate Highway 694, and Minnesota Highway 36 are three of the main routes in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 square miles (11.6 kmē), of which, 4.0 square miles (10.4 kmē) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 kmē) of it (10.51%) is water. The elevation is 912 ft (278 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,771 people, 4,375 households, and 2,393 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,445.8 people per square mile (943.2/kmē). There were 4,471 housing units at an average density of 1,119.1/sq mi (431.6/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 85.38% White, 4.20% African American, 0.58% Native American, 6.68% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.29% of the population.

There were 4,375 households out of which 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.3% were non-families. 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $46,609, and the median income for a family was $61,082. Males had a median income of $41,205 versus $31,689 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,624. About 4.6% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.

History:  

LITTLE CANADA, a city in section 32 of New Canada Township with a post office, located in section 13, 1852-76; the first settler was French Canadian farmer, voyageur, and trader Benjamin Gervais, who came in 1844. Abraham Lambert, born in 1790 in Lauzon, Canada, came to the area in 1845, was postmaster, 1852-54, and died in 1875.
