History:

LONG LAKE, a Great Northern Railway village in Orono, was named for the adjoining Long Lake, one of our most abundant lake names. Originally part of Medina Township, the village incorporated on February 20, 1906, and again on April 21, separating from the township on April 25; the post office began as Tamarack in 1856 in the home of postmaster Henry Stubbs, changing to the present name in 1869, two years after a station of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad was built in section 34; Tamarack was named for the vast tamarack swamps in the western part of the county.
