New London Minnesota Community Guide

New London, also known as “The City on the Pond,” is one place you should put on your list of “small towns to visit.” The picturesque town is located north of Spicer off Highway 23 on Highway 9. There’s so much to be said about this small town with a New England charm. It offers an experience unlike others with recreation, rich history, community celebrations, fine art, shopping and dining.

One of the unique qualities about this community is the diversity of talent among the locals. Don’t be surprised to see beautiful artistic creations on the walls of buildings or inside one of the art galleries in town. You’ll also find many locals showcasing their talents under the bright lights on the stage of the The Little Theatre. Come summertime, the Little Crow Ski Team performs for the community on the Crow River at Neer Park. One way or another, New London will certainly go above and beyond your expectations.

New London is a city in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota along the Middle Fork of the Crow River. Minnesota State Highways 9 and 23 are two of the main routes in the city, and U.S. Route 71 is nearby. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.24 square miles (3.21 km²), of which, 1.19 square miles (3.08 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.13 km²) of it is water. The elevation is 1,207 ft (368 m) above sea level.

New London, Minnesota is the oldest town in Kandiyohi County. It had its pioneer beginnings in 1850, when Louis Larson discovered a waterfall while out on a trapping expedition and visualized a mill. In 1861, he took homestead on a large piece of land, which includes most of present day New London. Larson later named the place for his old home town - New London, Wisconsin.

New London continued to grow in size and population and became an official city in 1889.The city was the temporary county seat of Kandiyohi County from 1867-1870.

NEW LONDON Township, organized August 25, 1866, derived its name from the city in section 10, which was founded in 1865 by building a sawmill and was incorporated April 8, 1889. The name was chosen by Louis Larson, "from a similarity he saw with the location of New London, Wis., a prospering village of his old home county." The city was the temporary county seat, 1867-70; the post office began in Monongalia County in 1867; it had a station of the Great Northern Railway.
