History:

NORWOOD, a city in sections 14 and 15, Young America, platted in 1872 and incorporated in 1881, is said to have been "named by Mr. [James] Slocum, an early banker there, for an eastern relative or friend of his wife." Fifteen villages and post offices in eastern and southern states have this name. The post office began in 1873, with Slocum as first postmaster. The community had a number of general and specialty stores, artisans, workshops, and lumber dealers, and a station of the Chicago and North Western and Soo Line railroads in section 14. In January 1997 the town merged with Young America to become Norwood Young America.

YOUNG AMERICA Township has a village of this name, which was platted in section 11 in the fall of 1856 and was incorporated March 4, 1879. The same name is also given to a small lake there. At the organization of the township in 1858, it was first named Farmington, but later in that year was renamed Florence, and in 1863 it was again changed to the present name, like its village. This name is a familiar expression for the vigor and progressiveness of the young people of the United States. Its only use elsewhere as a geographic name is for a village in Cass County, Ind. The community had a station of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, a flour mill, a creamery, and grain elevators; its post office began in 1856. In January 1997 the town merged with Norwood to become Norwood Young America.
