Guide to Rice Minnesota

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.71 square miles (14.79 km²), of which, 5.67 square miles (14.69 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) of it is water. The terrain is largely sandy and flat. Numerous pine and poplar intersperse irrigated farm fields. The Mississippi River is located west of Rice, and Little Rock Lake is located east. U.S. Route 10 serves as a main route in the community.

RICE, a railway village in Langola in section 29, is in honor of George T. Rice, who kept a hotel about three-fourths of a mile farther west for the stage travel previous to the building of this railway. His name was also given to an extensive prairie that includes the western two-thirds of Langola and the northwest part of Watab Township. The village was first settled in 1877 on the Little Rock River and was sometimes called Langola for the township; its post office began in 1878 as Rices, changing to Rice in 1889; it had a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad, several mills and elevators, a creamery and cheese factory, plus a variety of other businesses.

The north end is ~1.5 miles east of the City of Rice and extends 3.25 miles south (x 1 mile wide) where it narrows to cross under Highway 10. Little Rock Lake South of Highway 10 is approximately 4200' x 1200' feet and narrows into a 2' to 4' deep navigable channel emptying into to the Mississippi River. Little Rock Lake was enhanced in 1911 when the Watab Pulp and Paper Company constructed a dam along the Mississippi River in Sartell, MN. By the end of the 1950s much development had occurred on the lake, mostly characterized as seasonal cabins.
