SAUK CENTRE Township, settled in 1856 and organized in 1858, received this name in allusion to its central location on the Sauk River, between the Sauk Rapids of the Mississippi and Lake Osakis, which likewise was named for its former occupation by a small band of Sauk Indians, as related in the chapter of Benton County. The city of this township, platted in 1863, was incorporated February 12, 1876, and received a city charter March 5, 1889. Alexander Moore obtained the townsite in 1855 in his mother's name, platted the site and suggested the name, and built a dam across the Sauk River and a mill. The post office was established in 1857 in postmaster Warren Adley's home, using the spelling Sauk Center until 1936, when the city won its fight to have the name spelled as Moore suggested. The city had a station of the Great Northern Railway in section 9 and of the Northern Pacific Railroad in section 10. The city is the birthplace of Sinclair Lewis and is thought to be the subject of his book Main Street, although he denied its being the sole source of the book's subject matter.
