TAOPI, a city in sections 9 and 16 in Lodi Township, platted in 1875, was named in honor of Taopi (Wounded Man), a leader of the farmer band of the Dakota, who died in March 1869. He was one of the first converts to Christianity at the Redwood mission on the Minnesota River and at the time of the Dakota War of 1862 was friendly to the whites and aided in the rescue of many. He is commemorated in a book, Taopi and His Friends, or the Indians' Wrongs and Rights, by Rev. S. D. Hinman, Bishop Whipple, and others (125 pp., with his portrait, published in 1869). The village was incorporated on March 6, 1878, and reincorporated on April 25, 1907. It was the site of the largest steam flouring mill in the southern part of the state and had a station serving several rail lines, including the Chicago Great Western Railroad; the post office began in 1875.
