Geography:

Tonka Bay is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. It is located on Lake Minnetonka between what is called the upper and lower lakes. Manitou Road serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.5 kmē), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.5 kmē) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 kmē) of it (2.04%) is water.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,547 people, 614 households, and 456 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,622.0 people per square mile (628.7/kmē). There were 651 housing units at an average density of 682.5/sq mi (264.6/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 98.64% White, 0.13% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.52% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.42% of the population.

There were 614 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 33.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $84,879, and the median income for a family was $90,783. Males had a median income of $69,375 versus $41,328 for females. The per capita income for the city was $50,825. About 1.9% of families and 2.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 1.5% of those age 65 or over.

History:  

TONKA BAY, a city of one square mile developed as a major summer resort area in Excelsior Township, section 27, bears a name abbreviated from Minnetonka. It was incorporated as a village on September 16, 1901, the same area authorized for incorporation in 1879 as Minnetonka Lake Park, but was never developed; it had a post office, 1896-1920, to handle mail formerly distributed through Excelsior.
