Two Harbors is a bustling harbor
community nestled on the shores of Lake Superior. A wonderful
blend of days past and present can be enjoyed here. From April
to January you can still watch the "gigantic lakers" as they
first maneuver into the harbor at Agate Bay and then fill with
tons of taconite.
While visiting the harbor area you will also find the locomotives "Three Spot" and "Mallet", along with the "Edna G." tugboat. The "Three Spot" carried the very first load of iron ore from the Iron Range to Two Harbors for shipment, while the "Mallet" is the largest of all steam powered engines. The "Edna G." was the last of the working coal-fired steam tugs. Recently restored, it still stands guard over Agate Bay. You will also find the "Two Harbors Light Station" along Agate Bay. She is the last working light station in Minnesota and casts her beacon out onto the "Big Lake," assuring floating travelers of their location. Present day Two Harbors has earned the reputation of "Trailhead for the North Shore Highlands." One can find trails for foot, train, bike, boat, plane, snowmobile, bike, ski, and even auto, fanning out for exploration among the North Shore Highlands. At days end, Two Harbors is home for reflection, wave watching, agate hunting and relaxing. Whatever your cup of tea, a great adventure awaits you in Two Harbors. For those heading further up the North Shore -- whether fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, snowmobiling, skiing, camping, hiking, or just relaxing -- Two Harbors merchants can provide all you need for the trip. If you are flying in, Two Harbors Municipal Airport has two runways with one lit for nighttime landings. If your plans include sailing, power-boating, or fishing for "the big one" on Lake Superior, take advantage of Two Harbors' boat ramps with free parking and launching. Or, let a professional guide navigate the lake for you through one of the area's many charter fishing services. Golfers can keep up on their game with a round or two at Lakeview National Golf Course. |

The city of Two Harbors is the county seat and a major shipping point for iron ore on Lake Superior; it lies on two little bays, natural harbors, named Agate and Burlington Bays, the ore docks being on the western Agate Bay. Beach sand and gravel here contain frequent pebbles of banded chalcedony called agate. The city was platted in 1885 as Agate Bay, although its post office was known as Two Harbors when established in 1883; it was incorporated as a village March 9, 1888, and as a city February 26, 1907. The townsite of Burlington at Burlington Bay was platted in 1856, first incorporated on May 23, 1857, and later incorporated with Agate Bay as Two Harbors; Burlington had a post office, 1856-62. The first shipment of ore arrived from the Soudan Mine on July 31, 1884. It is the site of the Edna G., a tugboat owned by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad, built in 1896 and named for Edna Greatsinger, daughter of Jacob Greatsinger, president of the railroad; the tug was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as the only steam-powered tug operating on a Great Lake. Segog, named for developer Ray F. Segog, is one of several additions to the city.
