Geography:

Vernon Center is a city in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, along the Blue Earth River. U.S. Route 169 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.50 square miles (1.29 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,030 ft (314 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

At the 2010 census, there were 332 people, 132 households and 90 families in the city. The population density was 677.6 inhabitants per square mile (261.6 /km2). There were 142 housing units at an average density of 289.8 per square mile (111.9 /km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.8% White, 0.9% African American, and 0.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 132 households of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.8% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.11.

The median age was 34.4 years. 29.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 31.2% were from 25 to 44; 23.4% were from 45 to 64; and 11.1% were 65 years of age or older. The population were 46.7% male and 53.3% female.

History:

VERNON CENTER Township, settled in 1855, was at first named Montevideo by the county commissioners, April 6, 1858, but ten days later they renamed it Vernon, and on October 14 of the same year they changed this to the present name. A village had been platted here in June 1857 by proprietors who came from Mount Vernon, Ohio, two of whom, Col. Benjamin F. Smith and Benjamin McCracken, gave to it the name Vernon. The many villages and cities of the United States that bear this name, including the home of Washington in Virginia, received it primarily in honor of the distinguished English admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), the hero of the expeditions capturing Porto Bello in 1739 and attacking Cartagena in 1741. When the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway was built through this township in 1879, the first name given to the station here was Edgewood, for its being at the edge of a grove, but it was renamed in 1885 for the township, although neither the township nor the station is quite centrally situated. The city of Vernon Center, in section 26, was incorporated as a village in 1899; the post office was established in 1858. Early businesses were flour mills, a sorghum factory, elevators, lumber dealers, a creamery, the Barnes Opera House and the Vernon Center Opera House, and several general stores.
