Wahkon Minnesota Community Guide

Location:

Welcome to Wahkon Minnesota

Tucked along Mille Lacs Lake's south shore, Wahkon was the earliest settlement in the Mille Lacs Lake area, beginning its history in 1885. It was platted on the southeast shore of Mille Lacs Lake by the Soo Railroad Company near the site of the old town of Lawrence, once an American Indian trading post.

Robert and Ben Briggs built a log cabin near the old site of the Soo Line Depot, acted as land surveyors and located men on claims as families began moving into the area. In 1907, with the coming of the railroad, the Wahkon town site was set up and in 1912 it was incorporated as a village.

Wahkon was a typical "boom town" of the early days with American Indians, lumberjacks, ox and horse teams filling the town's streets. The town became a rail terminal and the docking point for large logging company steamers that transported logs from all points around the lake.

Today the community is booming again with a revitalized main street which includes a post office, realtors, ice cream shop, on and off-sale liquor, convenience store with gas pumps, two bars, restaurants, several craft and quilt shops, a hotel, health spa, thrift store, accounting business, Christmas store and coffee shop. Several resorts are located in town and nearby. Wahkon has a city park and boat launch facilities to serve tourists and visitors.

History:

WAHKON, a city in section 17 of Isle Harbor Township, was incorporated as a village on November 6, 1912; it was established in 1885 as Potts Town, changed to Lawrence in 1891 when the post office was established, and changed again in 1910 to Wahkon. This name is the Dakota name of Mille Lacs, spelled wakan in the Dakota dictionary by Rev. Stephen R. Riggs, defined as "spiritual, sacred, consecrated, wonderful, incomprehensible." The Dakota applied this name especially to a very remarkable but small island far out in the lake, about seven miles northwest from Wahkon, consisting of rock, granitic boulders piled by the ice of the lake to a height of nearly 20 feet, a noted resort of gulls and pelicans, called on maps Spirit Island or Pelican Island. Only 1 or 2 feet below the lake level, and visible under the water for 100 feet or more to the north and east, is a ledge of the bedrock described by David I. Bushnell in Brower's memoir of Mille Lac (p. 121, with a picture, on p. 118, of the heaped rock masses forming the island). Wonderful as the island is, it was the origin of the Dakota name of the lake, of this village, and, by a punning perversion noted on a later page, the name of the Rum River.

Hennepin Island, also named Prisoner's Island, alluding to the captivity of Hennepin, who probably, however, never came to this island, lying nearly five miles north of Wahkon village, is a small and low reef of boulders, called Deception Crest by Brower. The only other island far from the shore is the Wakan or Spirit Island, before noted as the source of the old Dakota name for Mille Lacs, Mde Wakan, and the differently spelled village name, Wahkon. By proclamation of the president of the United States in 1915, Spirit Island is a bird refuge or reservation, for protection of water-loving birds that have resting places and nests there.

Mille Lacs Lake

At 132,500 acres, Mille Lacs is Minnesota's second-largest inland lake.  Its maximum depth is 42 feet, while much of the main lake falls into the 20 to 38 foot depth ranges. The northern half contains most of the lake's mud flats and the southern half of the lake has more gravel and rock bars. All sides of the lake offer some shallow reef-top fishing. Deep-water angling takes place on the southern deep gravel and rocks as well as on dozens of mud flats in the north half of the lake.

Soo Line Bicycle and ATV Trail

The Soo Line Trail is a dual trail with a paved section for bicycles and a rock bed for ATVs.  The bicycle portion runs from Isle to Onamia, (about 12 miles) and connects with roads to bring you to Kathio State Park.  The ATV portion runs from Genola, Minnesota to Superior, Wisconsin.  Many riders enjoy the trails at Red Top, just a few miles away.
