Outdoor activities include excellent fishing on Birch Lake with a range of resort or camping facilities available. The area also offers excellent opportunities for viewing or photographing wildlife such as wolves, moose, deer, bear. and smaller game.

The Babbitt beach is a great place for the entire family! It is situated on 36.88 acres, with a 1,040 sq. ft. beach house equipped with changing rooms for men and women, restrooms, a lifeguard room, a first-aid storage room, and a concession stand. There is an additional restroom facility located outside the beach house.

This nine (9) hole public golf course is situated on 71+ acres of City-owned land. It is leased to, operated and governed by the Babbitt Golf Association, a Minnesota non-profit corporation. The course is located about 1 1/4 miles west of the City proper on County Highway 21. Green fees are $16.00 for 9 holes and $22.00 for 18 holes. Gas car rentals are $14.00 for 9 holes and $22.00 for 18 holes. Tee times do not have to be reserved. The course fairways are outlined with various species of pine trees and situated on a level terrain suitable and enjoyable for walkers. The course has a complete irrigation system on the fairways, tee boxes and challenging greens. The large clubhouse is fully equipped with kitchen facilities, a pro shop with golf supplies, golf cart rental, pull cart rental, and storage for personal golf clubs/pull carts. There are 18 tee boxes of different lengths for all skill levels with red, white, blue, and gold tee markers. The course is well groomed with the rough mowed to one and one-half inch height.

Central Boulevard Park (located on Central Boulevard) The City has updated the children's playground, located across from the Shopping Center, with new playground equipment. Picnic tables with shelter and benches are also located here for family fun. The City Parks and Beautification Board maintain beautiful flower gardens close by for everyone's enjoyment.

This 2.75 acre park has shelters with four picnic tables, benches, and electric power outlets. It also has walking paths, trees, a volleyball court, a basketball court, a horseshoe pit, a sliding hill, and a pond with a fountain and lights.

The Taconite State Trail stretches 165 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely and intersects with the Arrowhead State Trail just west of Lake Vermillion. Portions are paved for biking and in-line skating. The remainder of the natural surface trail is used primarily for snowmobiling in the winter. The trail goes through a few areas that have standing water in the summer, however portions of the trail are suitable for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking.

The Taconite Trail winds through forests of birch and aspen intertwined with pine, leading the visitor by many isolated lakes and streams. From Grand Rapids heading north, you see the impact of the taconite and iron mining industry. The northern portion of the trail terrain is rolling and tree covered as it winds through state and national forest land.

Eight trail waysides and picnic facilities offer scenic vistas of the hills, lakes and rivers of this area. The trail also links three state parks: Bear Head Lake, Soudan Underground Mine, and McCarthy Beach. The landscape in and around Bear Head Lake State Park is very rolling and rocky.
