Guide to Eagle Lake Minnesota

Eagle Lake is a city in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. U.S. Route 14 and Minnesota State Highway 60 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.61 square miles (4.17 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,010 ft (308 m).

EAGLE LAKE, a railway village in sections 7 and 18, Le Ray Township, received its name from the neighboring lake, which had been so named by the U.S. land surveyors because many bald eagles had nests in high trees on the lakeshore. It was platted in November 1872 by Freeman A. Cate on a portion of his farm in section 18, and in 1874 James Steward and Walter L. Breckenridge platted another site just east of the original one. It was incorporated as a village on July 14, 1902. The village was the principal center of wood and lumber businesses in the county in 1870s; it had a station of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway in section 18, mills, and elevators; and exported wheat, pork, hoop poles, and wood. Its post office was known as Spirer, 1870-73, the name a form of Speir, Germany, as suggested by J. Beirlis. Over the years the city has seen a gradual change from an industrial village to a residential site.
