Geography:
Esko is an unincorporated community in Thomson
Township, Carlton County, Minnesota. The community is located between
Cloquet and Duluth at the junction of Interstate 35 and County Road 1
(Thomson Road). County 61 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the
township has a total area of 103.3 km² (39.9 mi²). 102.7 km² (39.7 mi²)
of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.63%) is water. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Demographics:
As of the census of 2010,
there were 5,003 people, 1,828
households, and 1,469 families residing
in the township. The population density
was 329.64/km² (127.18/mi²). There were
1,892 housing units at an average
density of 123.59/km² (47.72/mi²). The
racial makeup of the township was 97.0%
White, 0.2% African American, 0.6%
Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% from
other races, and 1.2% from two or more
races. Hispanic or Latino of any race
were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,828
households out of which 35.6% had
children under the age of 18 living with
them, 71.1% were married couples living
together, 4.9% had a female householder
with no husband present, and 19.6% were
non-families. 15.7% of all households
were made up of individuals and 5.4% had
someone living alone who was 65 years of
age or older. The average household size
was 2.74 and the average family size was
3.05. In the township the
population was spread out with 29.3%
under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24,
29.6% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to
64, and 9.3% who were 65 years of age or
older. The median age was 37 years. For
every 100 females there were 101.5
males. For every 100 females age 18 and
over, there were 101.5 males.
History:
Esko was settled by immigrants between the 1870s and early 1900s. The
majority of settlers were Finnish and
their culture is reflected in the traditions of the community. In 1919 a
small store was built at the corner of what is now Thomson Road and
County 61 by a man named Alex Esko. It became known as "Esko's Corner."
The Lincoln School was built nearby in 1920 and residents began to move
into the area. The name was shortened to "Esko" in 1935.From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
