Geography:
Hackensack is a city in Cass County, Minnesota.
Minnesota State Highway 371 serves as a main route in the community.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area
of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km²), of which, 1.01 square miles (2.62 km²) of
it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03km²) is water. State Highway 371
is the main arterial in the area. The elevation is 1,391 ft (424 m) above
sea level.

Demographics:
As of the census of 2010, there were 313 people, 143
households, and 79 families residing in the city. The
population density was 309.9 inhabitants per square mile
(119.7/km2). There were 194 housing units at an average
density of 192.1 per square mile (74.2/km2). The racial
makeup of the city was 95.8% White, 1.0% Native
American, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 0.3% of the population.
There were 143 households of which 25.9% had children
under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married
couples living together, 4.9% had a female householder
with no husband present, 8.4% had a male householder
with no wife present, and 44.8% were non-families. 38.5%
of all households were made up of individuals and 14%
had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.13 and the
average family size was 2.85.
The median age in the city was 45.1 years. 19.8% of
residents were under the age of 18; 9.3% were between
the ages of 18 and 24; 20.8% were from 25 to 44; 24.9%
were from 45 to 64; and 25.2% were 65 years of age or
older. The gender makeup of the city was 54.3% male and
45.7% female.

History:
HACKENSACK,
a city in Birch Lake Township, section 19, was named for an earlier post
office there established in 1888, which derived its name from the town of
Hackensack in New Jersey, on the Hackensack River, given by James Curo,
who was the first postmaster, ranchman, and merchant there. It was
incorporated as a village on June 5, 1903, and separated from the township
on May 18, 1911; it had a station of the Minnesota and International
Railway; it was also the home of Lucette Diana Kensack, Paul Bunyan's
girlfriend.

Chainsaw Event
The 3-day event, which
takes place in Hackensack City Park the last weekend in
September, features chainsaw carvers from throughout the United
States who will turn simple logs into works of art. The crowd
can enjoy the progress as the carvers utilize their artistic
insight and creativity to make sculptures from the logs. As part
of the event, there are food vendors and numerous booths
featuring the work of several Minnesota artisans. There will be
two auctions of the carved pieces - one on Saturday and another
concluding the event on Sunday.

Moondance Harvest Moon Festival
Fall in Northern Minnesota
is something to savor. Join us at Moondance for our Harvest Moon
Festival - a truly unique beer and wine tasting festival with
live entertainment. The fall colors at Moondance are amazing and
Moondance is all about fun, so we have combined them all into
one! Over 3,000 people attended last year's event. Come for just
the day or make it a weekend and stay in our campgrounds or one
of the nice hotels or resorts nearby and hit one of the Harvest
Moon restaurant pairings for a special meal on Friday night!

Moondance Jam
Moondance Jam is an annual
rock and classic rock festival held in mid-July in the Leech
Lake/Chippewa National Forest Area near Walker, Minnesota. It is
recognized as Minnesota's largest rock festival and the premier
classic rock festival in the United States. The Jam has gone
from being a party for a few hundred family and friends back in
1992 to a rock 'n' roll and camping celebration that entertains
tens of thousands today mainly because it has maintained a
clean, safe and friendly atmosphere along with open festival
seating for general admission ticket holders.

Penguin Plunge
Penguin Plunge, sponsored
by the Hackensack Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. The plunge is a
fundraiser, supporting the Hackensack Area Fire & Rescue and
Faith in Action for Cass County. This is the first time
Rendezvous Brewing will plunge into the icy waters of Birch
Lake. Please join us in support of these outstanding
organizations. Any amount you can donate would be greatly
appreciated! Note: the plunge is in the lake, near the boat

Sweetheart Days
For more
than 60 years the town of Hackensack has honored "The Lady by
the Lake" Lucette Diana Kensack by celebrating Sweetheart Days
in July. The always popular Sweetheart Days event takes place
the second weekend in July in Hackensack. There are a variety of
activities planned for kids and kids of all ages. Join us as we
celebrate the sweet days of summer! The Fabulous Fireworks
display will be on Saturday over Beautiful Birch Lake.

Foothills State Forest

Foot Hills State Forest's proximity
to the metropolitan areas of St. Cloud and the Twin Cities make it a
popular recreation spot. The trail system in Foot Hills State Forest
is used for hiking and OHV riding in the summer and cross-country
skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Foot Hills State Forest has two
state ski trails: Hiram, located off Highway 12, and Cut Lake, located
off Bull Moose Forest Road. Refer to the state forest map for details.
A ski pass is required. The Spider Lake OHV Trails located in the
forest include about 26 miles of trails to ride.

Very
nice, well maintained and busy park located on the shores of Birch
Lake in Hackensack, MN. The park features something for everyone in
the family, chainsaw carving of Paul Bunyan, giant statue of Paul'
sweetheart, Lucette Kenack, playground, visitors center, boat ramp,
fishing pier, log cabin library, and more. The park hustles in the
summer and even hots a kid fishing contest every Tuesday during the
summer. Lots of places to stretch your legs, let the kids play, take
photos and relax with lots of interesting things to see.

North Country Trail
The North Country National Scenic
Trail is the longest in the National Trails System, stretching 4,700
miles across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont, traversing
forests and farmlands, remote terrain and nearby communities. Whether
you’re looking to day-hike a few miles or plan a longer overnight
backpacking trip, a multitude of diverse landscapes and hiking
opportunities are waiting for you.

Paul Bunyan Trail
The trail pathway follows the original railroad line
built in 1893 by Burlington Northern and abandoned in 1983. It is
now among the longest paved "Rails to Trails" in the nation. This
trail links 16 communities between it's source in
Brainerd/ Baxter and Lake Bemidji State Park on the north. It is
non-motorized, except for snowmobiles. Uses of the Paul Bunyan Trail
will include bicycling, hiking, in-line skating, and it is fully
accessible for persons with disabilities. The Trail showcases area
pine forests, sparkling lakes, colorful wildflowers and wildlife.
The user will pass along the shorelines of 21 lakes, through scenic
wetlands, and cross bridges over streams and rivers.

Spider Lake OHV Trails
The Spider Lake Trails
travel 29 miles throughout Foot Hills State Forest. From smooth and
sandy to rough and rocky, the trails provide a challenging ride as
they curve around lakes and ponds, follow ridges, and traverse several
hills and slopes throughout the forest. Trails are open year-round,
except on groomed, signed snowmobile trails.
