The City of about 1,872 people is a small, quiet
and very safe community where everyone knows everyone. We have
an excellent police force, volunteer fire department and a
recreation department that offers year-round activities. There
are hiking/biking trails, a swimming beach, four baseball
fields, a hockey arena, tennis courts, and basketball hoops - in
short, every amenity possible to make your stay enjoyable! We
have the Country Inn of Hoyt Lakes that offers comfort and ease,
if that is your desire.Our municipal camp ground, Fisherman's Point,
is hailed as one of the best in the state. It provides full
amenities, as well as some primitive camping opportunities.
Every campsite has been designed with a woodsy atmosphere and as
much privacy as you can possible want! And, the fishing is
GREAT. We're also very proud of our 9-hole golf course which
gives the average golfer quite a challenge. And, speaking of
challenges, Hoyt Lakes is located just 15 miles from Giant's
Ridge Golf and Ski Resort. Hoyt Lakes is only a 50-minute drive from Lake
Superior's North Shore via the Lake Superior National Forest
Scenic Byway (County Highway 11) that takes you right through
the beautiful Superior National Forest. This highway allows easy
access to some of Minnesota' most spectacular scenery,

Geography:
Hoyt Lakes is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota.
Saint Louis County Highway 110 (CR 110) serves as a main route in Hoyt
Lakes. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has
a total area of 58.09 square miles (150.45 km2); 56.44 square miles
(146.18 km2) is land and 1.65 square miles (4.27 km2) is water. The
elevation is 1,473 feet (449 m).

Demographics:
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,017 people,
885 households, and 602 families residing in the city.
The population density was 35.7 inhabitants per square
mile (13.8/km2). There were 1,016 housing units at an
average density of 18.0 per square mile (6.9/km2). The
racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White, 0.5% Native
American, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 0.3% of the population.
There were 885 households of which 23.5% had children
under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% were married
couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder
with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder
with no wife present, and 32.0% were non-families. 26.8%
of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2%
had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.27 and the
average family size was 2.71.
The median age in the city was 49.3 years. 20.2% of
residents were under the age of 18; 4% were between the
ages of 18 and 24; 21.5% were from 25 to 44; 29.4% were
from 45 to 64; and 25.1% were 65 years of age or older.
The gender makeup of the city was 49.6% male and 50.4%
female.
History:
Hoyt Lakes, a city in Hoyt Lakes Township (T. 58N, R.
14W), was incorporated as a village on November 17, 1955; the community
was developed by Pickands Mather and Company and named in 1952 for Elton
Hoyt II, head of the firm; the post office established in 1955. Courtesy Minnesota

Mesabi Trail
 The
Taconite State Trail stretches 165 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely
and intersects with the Arrowhead State Trail just west of Lake
Vermillion. Portions are paved for biking and in-line skating. The
remainder of the natural surface trail is used primarily for snowmobiling
in the winter. The trail goes through a few areas that have standing
water in the summer, however portions of the trail are suitable
for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. The Taconite Trail winds through forests of birch
and aspen intertwined with pine, leading the visitor by many isolated
lakes and streams. From Grand Rapids heading north, you see the
impact of the taconite and iron mining industry. The northern portion
of the trail terrain is rolling and tree covered as it winds through
state and national forest land. Eight trail waysides and picnic facilities offer
scenic vistas of the hills, lakes and rivers of this area. The trail
also links three state parks: Bear Head Lake, Soudan Underground
Mine, and McCarthy Beach. The landscape in and around Bear Head
Lake State Park is very rolling and rocky. |

Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival
The Water Carnival, which started as a small City
Picnic, has grown into a four day Festival that draws thousands
of people to Hoyt Lakes. It is held the fourth full weekend of
July. Events now are too numerous to mention, but include
Softball, Volleyball, Tennis, Inline Skating, 5K Race, Turtle
Race, live music, queen coronation, Dock Dogs, Prior Lake Water
Ski Show, a Parade, Fireworks and much, much more! |
