History:

KNIFE LAKE Township received its name from the Knife Lake and River, which are translated from their Dakota and Ojibwe names. The first knives of iron or steel obtained by the Dakota, in the winter of 1659-60, were brought there by Groseilliers and Radisson and the Huron and Ottawa Indians who accompanied them, as noted for Isanti County. The township was organized June 19, 1894, including at that time the townships of Ann Lake, Peace, Pomroy, and Knife Lake.
