History:

DARWIN Township, organized April 5, 1858, was then called Rice City, which was changed in 1869 to the name of its railway village, platted in October of that year. It was chosen in honor of E. Darwin Litchfield of London, England, a principal stockholder and promoter of the St. Paul and Pacific (now the Great Northern) Railroad, for whom also, as well as for his wife and his brothers, the village and township of Litchfield were named. The village in sections 22-27 was first organized by a party of surveyors from Dubuque, Iowa, who made claims on paper; the townsite was platted as Stella City and then named Rice City for Hon. Edmund Rice of St. Paul; it was incorporated as a village on June 16, 1919; the post office, established as Rice City, operated 1862-63 and again in 1868, the name changing to Darwin in 1869.
