Carlos Creek Winery was founded in 1997, and the doors to the winery were officially opened in July of 1999. There are 160 acres of land, of which 10 acres are dedicated vineyards and 15 acres are planted to 22 different varieties of apples. Our grape varieties include Frontunac, Foch, Valiant, Swenson Red, La Crescent, King of the North, and Edelweiss. Our apple varieties include Cortland, Fireside, Haralson, McIntosh, Regent, and our largest planting, Minnesota's state apple: Honeycrisp.

Fort Alexandria is a nearly exact replica of the old stockade, which was built in 1862 by the Eighth regular infantry on order of the Governor of Minnesota. The original location of the fort was two blocks east of this site. Fort Alexandria was the means of security as pioneers returned to this area following the Dakota Conflict 1860. It was the center of social and commercial activity for the whole region.

From handcrafted wood boats to grand hotels and private fishing clubs, Minnesota’s lakes have a rich and colorful maritime and resorting tradition reaching back nearly a century and a half. The Minnesota Lake Maritime Museum captures those memories and places them on exhibit for all to enjoy

Knute Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871. He built a small farm house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he make additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900. On October 1, 1987, the Knute Nelson House became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society. The turn of the century house has been completely restored, with many of the original furnishings intact.

The Kensington Runestone and the enduring mystery of its origin continue to be the hallmark of the Runestone Museum. The Runestone Museum has been home to the Kensington Runestone since 1958. This is recent history when compared to the span of the Runestone's life. It was discovered in 1898 clutched in the roots of the aspen tree on the Olaf Ohman farm near Kensington

Minnesota's 23rd State Trail, the Central Lakes is a scenic 14’ wide bituminous recreation trail that joins the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail in the city of Osakis. The Central Lakes Trail, www.centrallakestrail.com, is built on an abandoned Burlington Northern Railroad corridor in central Minnesota. In Douglas County, it begins in Osakis and travels northwesterly across three counties to Fergus Falls in Ottertail County.

A visit to Chippewa Park will tell you why people have been drawn to the place across the years. 2000 feet of shoreline of Little Chippewa Lake and twice that on Devils Lake are probably reason enough. Couple that with the unusual land form, a narrow isthmus 300 feet wide and about 2 feet above the lake level, and you have a perfect place to spend a hot summer day.

The discovery site of the Kensington Runestone, this 193 acre park is the homestead farm of the Ohman family. Runestone Park is used by families for picnics and reunions, businesses and other groups for pleasure outings, and winter sports enthusiasts for skiing, tobogganing, and snowmobiling. There are 2 picnic shelter areas and a range of outdoor recreation activities including, volleyball, horseshoes, and hiking. Several history displays are maintained to help interpret the Runestone Park story.

The park is a little under 6 acres with 1200 feet of pristine shoreline on a fine fishing lake. A popular spot for summer afternoon picnics, Lake Brophy Park's shelter can accommodate groups of about 25 people nicely. Two examples of fine cut stone craftsmanship remain in the park, leftovers from the depression era work programs of the 1930s and 40s.

Lake Le Homme Dieu Beach is located in Alexandria Township of Douglas County, Minnesota. From Alexandria, go north on State Trunk Highway 29 just past the city limits to the beach entrance. The beach is also accessible by a paved off road bicycle path that connects the city neighborhoods south of the lake.

The pioneer village of Spruce Hill was vacated in the early twentieth century. The property sat undisturbed in the ownership of a former resident until Douglas County acquired it in 1979. Remnants of the early village are evident today only as depressions in the ground and old building foundation pieces. The remains of an earthen dam constructed to power a sawmill are still visible in the landscape.
