McIntosh is a city in Polk County, Minnesota. US Highway 2 and Polk County Roads 8 and 41 are the main routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2), of which 0.99 square miles (2.56 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water The elevation is 1,234 ft (376 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2010, there were 625 people, 285 households, and 155 families residing in the city. The population density was 631.3 inhabitants per square mile (243.7/km2). There were 311 housing units at an average density of 314.1 per square mile (121.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.8% White, 1.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.
There were 285 households of which 21.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.6% were non-families. 41.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.03 and the average family size was 2.72.
The median age in the city was 48.4 years. 18.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19% were from 25 to 44; 26.2% were from 45 to 64; and 28.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.0% male and 52.0% female.

McIntosh, a city in sections 9, 10, and 16 of King Township, was named for Angus J. McIntosh, the owner of a part of the village site. He built a store and lodging house one and a half miles east of the present townsite, where he was postmaster when the post office began in 1884; he purchased land in the new townsite and lived there for a number of years before moving to Detroit Lakes, where he died in 1923. The city was incorporated as a village in April 1891 and reincorporated and separated from the township on July 11, 1911. The city includes the area formerly called King, which was principally a post office, 1883-89, in section 10 in the store of Ephraim King, three miles northeast of McIntosh, which consolidated with McIntosh in 1889. It had a Great Northern Railway station.
