Geography:
Moose Lake is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota.
Interstate 35; Minnesota State Highways 27 and 73; and County 61 are
four of the main routes in the community. According to the United States
Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.66 square miles (9.48 km²),
of which, 3.27 square miles (8.47 km²) of it is land and 0.39 square miles
(1.01 km²) of it is water. The elevation is 1,060 ft (323 m)
above sea level. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Demographics:
As of the census of 2010, there were
2,751 people, 648 households, and 318
families residing in the city. The
population density was 841.3 inhabitants
per square mile (324.8/km2). There were
732 housing units at an average density
of 223.9 per square mile (86.4/km2). The
racial makeup of the city was 79.2%
White, 14.4% African American, 3.7%
Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.5% from
other races, and 1.2% from two or more
races. Hispanic or Latino of any race
were 4.0% of the population.
There were 648 households of which
24.4% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 33.2% were married
couples living together, 11.6% had a
female householder with no husband
present, 4.3% had a male householder
with no wife present, and 50.9% were
non-families. 46.6% of all households
were made up of individuals and 27.8%
had someone living alone who was 65
years of age or older. The average
household size was 2.01 and the average
family size was 2.84.
The median age in the city was 39
years. 11.1% of residents were under the
age of 18; 9.2% were between the ages of
18 and 24; 39.9% were from 25 to 44;
25.7% were from 45 to 64; and 14.1% were
65 years of age or older. The gender
makeup of the city was 73.4% male and
26.6% female.
History:
Transportation routes were the main reason people originally settled
in the Moose Lake area. The Old Indian Trail joined the Mille Lacs
trail near Moose Lake. In 1856, Military Road was constructed 4 miles
east of Moose Lake at the stage stop then called Elkton.
Later, with the development of railroads, more people and business made
it to the area. The Northern Pacific Railroad, completed in 1870, brought
settlers nearer to Moosehead Lake and Moose Lake, which was
incorporated on February 15th, 1889. With the railroad, the logging
industry in the area thrived, but near the turn of the 19th century a
shift toward farming and recruiting more skilled people took place.
As time went by more transportation routes were built, including the
first state highway in the early 1900’s, and a second railroad, the
Soo Line, which was completed in 1909.
One of the defining
events in the history of the area is the fires that swept through
northeastern MN on October 12, 1918. To memorialize the 453 people that
died in the fire a 27-foot monument is erected just north of town.
The Fires of 1918 are annually commemorated by the Moose Lake Area
Historical Society at the Soo Line Depot on Folz Boulevard, opened as
a fire and railroad museum in 1995.
The years of rebuilding after
the fire saw changes in the economy with dairy farming becoming a main
industry, followed by building of the state hospital in 1937, which over
the years developed into a medium security prison.
Today some of
those trails and tracks that originally brought settlers and visitors to
the Moose Lake area are now very busy recreational trails, like the
Willard Munger and Soo Line trails. With our many rivers and lakes
finding activities to fill your time are easy to do and make us “A
Community For All Seasons.”

MOOSE LAKE Township has reference to its Moose Lake
and Moose Head Lake, each probably translated from their original Ojibwe
names. The city of Moose Lake had a station of the Northern Pacific and
Soo Line Railroads in section 20; its first house was built by John
Coutia about 1869. Frank Duquette was the first merchant, moving there
after Little Moose Station on the old military road closed, and served
as first postmaster in 1872. Cornelius McCabe built the first
full-service store, with a hall upstairs for meetings, known as McCabe
Hall. One hundred ninety-eight persons from Moose Lake perished in the

of the park. The trail stretches for 60 miles from Hinckley to
west Duluth. Visit the Agate and Geological Interpretive Center
to view exhibition hall showcasing Minnesota's gemstone , and
numerous rocks, minerals and geological displays.

This facility
is equipped with artificial ice allowing for skating from
October to March. The arena building houses locker rooms, a
heated viewing area, concession stand and restrooms as well as
abundant seating. During the summer months, this arena is
converted to a multi-use community center including farmers and
flea market.

State Trail

This trail is actually a
collection of three trails that stretch between the towns of
Duluth and Hinckley. It is the main trail, but it is linked with
the Alex Laveau Memorial Trail, in Carlton and the Matthew
Lourey State Trail, which is east of the other two trails. All
total, between all the trails, you can travel approximately 160
miles and venture through some of the most scenic areas of
Minnesota.
