History:
TURTLE RIVER Township likewise is named for its Turtle
River Lake and for the river so named flowing through this lake, the
most northern tributary of the Mississippi. A boom lumber village in the
township began on land on Turtle River Lake purchased in 1899 by Fred
DeSilver, who built a hotel and several stores; when the 1901 survey for
the Minnesota and International Railway extension passed through the
present site, merchants and residents removed their buildings to the
1898 homestead claim of Simon E. Bright. The post office operated
1899-1944, with Nels Otterstad as the first postmaster; he was also a
land surveyor and timber cruiser. By 1910, two large fires had destroyed
most buildings on the main street. Courtesy
